Calculating Manuscript Length:
| Text |
Multiply the number of LINES OF TYPE per page by the number of CHARACTERS (including blank spaces) per line by the number of full pages of the paper. You can also use the "word count" feature, available in most word processors to obtain the number of characters (including spaces).
Divide the result by 4600. That formula is for full pages of text only, so this is the TYPED MANUSCRIPT ESTIMATE. |
| Tables and figures |
Count four figures as one page, because they can be reduced if necessary. With tables, on the other hand, you have to consider that they may not be legible if reduced, so you have to estimate how much of a page it will take up. |
In the end, you add the result of the typed estimate to the result of the figures/tables estimate.
Here's an example:
- 25 lines of type x 100 characters per line x 10 paper pages = 25000
Divided by 4600 = 5.43, i.e. 51/2 pages.
- (8 figures = 2 pages) + (4 tables = 1 page) = total of 3 pages
- This paper would be estimated at 8.5 pages. (5.5 + 3 = 8.5)
